Stokes Croft & Montpelier

Getting off the train at Montpelier station and heading towards Montpelier...

First thing you see is Montpelier Toilet Saloon (photo doctored up a bit to make the letters stand out).
I think this used to be the railway hotel. I can remember when it was a pub (the Montpelier Tavern?). Now it's converted into flats.

You can walk through to Richmond Road.

There's some ornamentation on the building.

In Richmond Road there's the Cadbury pub.

Onwards to Picton Street.Passing some street art on the way.

Picton Street is regaining some of its former glory.

Some shop fronts.

Licata's Italian delicatessens has been here for many years.

Picton House. Picton Street.

The Bristolian cafe. I've heard the coffee is not good.

The top of Picton Street.

This place is very colourful.

Is this called the Magpie?

Into Stokes Croft (or it might be Cheltenham Road)

This building used to be the Christadelphian Church. Now it's a comedy venue.

The Polish church.

Then turn around and head back to town.

I've just looked it up - it's Cheltenham Road from Ashley Road up to the Polish Church, then it changes to Gloucester Road. South of Ashley Road it's Stokes Croft, apart from one little bit that we'll come to soon.

On Stokes Croft is the Carriage Works, a beautiful building that's lain derelict for years. Perhaps something will happen now that Stokes Croft is changing. The People's Republic of Stokes Croft have been very active in promoting art in the area and helping make the place less run-down .

The doorway next to the Carriage Works still features in the social diaries of many street drinkers.

The Carriage Works proper with street art.

A handsome old building on Stokes Croft. Now Kuvuka coffee shop.

A famous Banksy mural: The Mild, Mild West. It's been there years.

Turbo Island.

City Road church. Still in use. Above the door it says: Strive to enter in at the strait gate.

From St James Barton roundabout to King Square Avenue (by Mickeburgh's music shop) is called North Street, just to confuse people.

The Full Moon pub is there. It used to be a coaching inn and has changed into a modern version of that by becoming a backpackers hostel.

The pub sign.

The Full Moon from over the road. There seems to be some art display on the pedestrian island.

So there you are. That's a snapshot of Stokes Croft and Montpelier in spring 2010.

I'll leave you with a picture of one of the old doorway mosaics still surviving in the area.
